Wow. We started this process looking at the Monte gliders. These look really modern and cool but are in $1200-$1800 range. Yet we were ready to plunk down the cash. But after going to the store and sitting on them, we were disappointed. The leather is really good quality, but they either they don't recline, or don't glide while reclined. Worse, they are just not comfortable.
So forget looks. Let's go practical. We went to stores to look at the Dutaliers and Shermags. They were ok, but for the very traditional look, we thought they just were not worth the $$. So we decided to get a "throw-away" glider/rocker, thinking we'd use it while the baby was nursing, and then get rid of it. Friends had told us that the baby would spill or throw up all over whatever glider we got anyway.
We ended up taking a chance, sight unseen, on Target's "Barrington Premium 6 Position Gliding Recliner Rocker - Cherry Finish with Sage Microfiber", and the ottoman. Total: $420 including shipping. We found it here at amazon, but bought it at the Target.com site because if you buy Target stuff through amazon.com, you can't return it to the store.
While waiting for it and looking at other furniture, we ran into a Coaster glider similar to this one at a store nearby. We were impressed. And it was ridiculous -- on sale for only $140 including ottoman. Yet, it was well made. Oh well. We had already ordered the Barrington and were looking forward to it.
That Barrington was such a disappointment. The wood and construction "looked" ok, but we never even took it out of the box. The fabric felt so "cheap", especially compared to the cheaper Coaster we had just touched at the store. So we returned it to Target and ordered this one (we liked this style better than the one at the store, and the store did not carry nor could order any other models).
We are ecstatic with it. The microfiber does actually feel soft and smooth. It took 15 minutes to assemble (two screws only, plus slide the fabric over). The reclining mechanism was a bit stiff at first, but I put a little bit of lubricant (I used bicycle teflon, but any lubricant would have been ok) and now it's very smooth.
And it does it "all" -- reclines, swivels, glides while reclined, the ottoman glides very nicely. It's very comfortable. My wife slept 4 hours on it last night and loved it. Given her swollen feet and hands, it's much better than sleeping on the bed.
It seems made well enough. I weigh 180 lbs. and it feels solid. Some of the reviews here have said that we should expect it to break down due to poor welding or bearings. That may be true, but it doesn't "feel" that way yet. It very well could be an issue of weight. Perhaps it's made well enough for us but not for someone who weighs 250 lbs or more. So far, it's great.
So yes... highly highly recommend this glider. We are still shocked at how little we paid for it, actually.
